King Edward VI Academy

King Edward VI offers every child the opportunity to fulfil their academic, creative and sporting potential to ensure each and every child achieves academic success.

Sixth Form

Our aim is to offer the very best education possible to our young people in order to prepare them for the next step in their lives, whether that is studying at university, further training or the world of work.

A brand new purpose-built Sixth Form centre, sponsored by the David Ross Foundation, opened at King Edward VI Academy in September 2014, offering a range of courses for Year 12 and 13 students.

Facilities include two learning pods, a careers guidance area and a student social area.

We have created an expanded Sixth Form offer to meet our student's need, this includes level 3 courses in Maths, English, Science, History, Art, Performing Arts, Business, Finance, Tourism and Sports Studies, Law, as well as a range of enrichment and developmental activities.

Classes are small, rarely above ten students and Sixth Formers have their own study room and social area as well as shared access to all dining and study facilities.

Our centre operates on the site of King Edward VI Academy in Spilsby and Havelock Academy in Grimsby. Whilst each academy has its own range of courses, teaching bases and individual uniform; there is a strong partnership between our two learning centres.

King Edward VI Academy Sixth Form

Havelock Academy Sixth Form is spread over two sites, King Edward VI Academy, in Spilsby and Havelock Academy in Grimsby. Both academies are part of the David Ross Education Trust.

Both academies serve deprived areas, both with very different needs. Havelock Academy is in a deprived ward in Grimsby which faces a number of challenges including low socioeconomic home, high crime rates and increasing poverty. Whilst at King Edward VI Academy we have more rural challenges and lack access to inner city opportunities.

The sixth form, across both sites, offers young people the opportunity to resit GCSE qualifications if they don’t reach a grade 4 on entry at GCSE in English and Maths only. Students undertake 4 qualifications as a rule, but students who are resitting one or both GCSEs will only undertake 3 qualifications at level 3 to allow time for their resits.

Both sites give students at least 3 hours per week in GCSE resit classes. These are small, no more than 5 students. These classes are taught by qualified teachers, instructors and learning mentors. Students are entered for the Autumn resit if they are ready and able.

Welcome from the Head of Sixth Form

At King Edward VI Academy we firmly believe that young people have a right to a happy, safe, and stimulating learning environment. We always aim to ensure that every student is able to achieve their potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our small but lively Sixth form offers a personalised, innovative, and stimulating post-16 experience. We offer a wide range of opportunities to gain qualifications and develop first class skills for employment and further study.

Students at King Edward VI Academy are taught by teachers who are well qualified, enthusiastic about their subject area and deliver high quality lessons and our excellent academic results. The dedication of our staff is reflected in the high numbers of students continuing to their chosen universities or apprenticeships.

Our students who continue from lower school benefit from learning in an environment with teachers that they are familiar with and who supported them all through years 7 to 11. However, we also ensure that those students who are joining from other schools are equally supported by our experienced tutor team and are a valued part of the KEVI community.

In our dedicated Sixth Form block, students have the space and facilities to embrace their creativity, independence and the academic challenges of their 2-year courses.

I would like to invite you to explore our Sixth Form pages on the school’s website to have a greater understanding of what we have to offer.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions either via the school office or by emailing me We look forward to welcoming you to our school
